Assam’s new population norms ‘discriminatory and unconstitutional’: Muslim League

While strongly condemning the Assam government’s population policy, Prof K.M. Kader Mohideen, the national president of the Indian Union Muslim League has said that the Assam Chief Minister seems to take pleasure in dividing the people and ruining the family lives of people, mostly Muslim migrants in the state.

Muslim League’s strong objections comes at a time the Assam government has decided to apply population norms in all government schemes.

“Whether it is a waiver of loans or government schemes, we are going to implement the population norms in the near future,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told journalists on Friday evening.

“The Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswas Sharma, while announcing the population and women empowerment policy of Assam which is to be introspectively implemented from 1 January 2021, has posed himself as the dictator in the Hitlerian fashion. He has announced that families with more than two children, mostly Muslims, will have no right to get any government job nor will they receive any benefits from the government’s welfare schemes nor will they be permitted to contest in the local body elections,” read the statement of IUML chief.

According to CM, the condition will initially not apply to the tea garden community and people belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

“This policy of Assam is not only discriminatory but anti-secular, and unconstitutional. The Chief Minister seems to take pleasure in dividing the people and ruining the family life,” alleged Kader Mohideen.

He also asserted that his party strongly condemned the CM’s policy of discrimination earlier too.

“All the secular democratic forces in the country should unitedly condemn this anti-secular policy and also insist the Chief Minister of Assam should with draw this anit-national, unconstitutional policy of discrimination and destruction,” Mohideen urged.

Ruling BJP government in Assam has already implemented the Population and Women Empowerment Policy of Assam that makes any person with more than two children ineligible for government gobs and polls to the civic bodies. The policy came into effect on January 1.

Saffron party leader and Assam CM had a week ago appealed to Assam’s migrant Muslims to adopt “decent family planning” measures, predicting conflicts over living space, if the population continued to explode.

Following his anti-Muslim statement, the Opposition Congress and its ally All India United Democratic Front alleged that the CM has intentionally targeted Muslim community in the state.
