Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Raijor Dal have forged an alliance for the upcoming Assembly Elections in Assam.
Both AJP and RD, the regional parties formed last year, are the offshoots of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests that rocked the state in December 2019.
Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) was launched by student organisations All Assam Students Union and Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad while RD was formed by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, a farmers’ body led by activist Akhil Gogoi who is in jail since December 2019 for his role in the anti-CAA protests.
Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, AJP chief made a formal announcement about the development on Thursday after meeting Raijor Dal president and jailed leader Akhil Gogoi.
“AJP and raijor Dal will fight the national parties and their allies in the State together in the upcoming polls,” Jyoti Gogoi said.
“Akhil Gogoi has been kept in detention for long in an undemocratic manner and should be released immediately. We have been saying since our party’s inception that both AJP and RD would contest the polls together and after the meeting, we can tell people of Assam that the decision for a tie-up is final,” he added.
With the announcement of the new alliance of two rregional parties, the Assam Assembly Elections are all set to be a three-front war.
While the BJP and its allies like the AGP and UPPL will be on one side, the Congress-led Grand Alliance comprising of AIUDF and 4 other parties will be on the other side.
Elections to the 126-member Assam Assembly is likely to be held in April-May.
