On Friday, former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala was convicted and sentenced to four years imprisonment by a special CBI court in a disproportionate assets case. The court also imposed a fine of ₹50 lakh on him.
At 87, Chautala is the oldest of the 19,584 inmates lodged in the different jails of Tihar, Hindustan Times reported.
Chautala is one of seven prisoners above the age of 80, according to prison records.
He will be lodged in a cell in jail number 2 along with two other inmates.
Another elderly politician prisoner in Tihar is former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar (76). He is serving life imprisonment after his conviction in the 1984 Sikh genocide case in 2018.
Om Prakash Chautala, son of Devi Lal who was the former deputy prime minister and one of the tallest farmer leaders of Haryana, has been state’s chief minister five times for varying periods, ranging from as low as five days to a full term of five years. He had been a seven time MLA .
He was sentenced to seven years in jail on charges of corruption and 10 years for criminal conspiracy following his first conviction in 2013 in JBT teachers’ recruitment scam.
Last year on 2 July, he was released form Tihar jail after he completed his sentence.
