Azamgarh protesters seriously injured in police violence, charged with sedition

Uttar Pradesh police have used tear gas and thrown bricks and stones to break up protests by hundreds over Citizenship Amendment Act in Azamgarh on Wednesday morning.

More than 400 people inclu7ding 200 women had entered a park in Azamgarh’s Bilariyaganj around 11pm on Tuesday and started raising slogans against CAA.

The protesters staging sit in paid no heed when police and administrative officers reached the spot and warned the protesters of legal action.

Around 4.am, the police used tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. Many protesters including women were brutally beaten up by policemen.

One woman was seriously injured after the police surrounded and cracked down on protesters. The 55-year old woman is in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with serious head injuries.

“The police surrounded the park from all sides at around 4 am and beat the boys and men who were standing nearby,” a woman protester told Maktoob.

“All through this, policemen used anti-Muslim slurs and all kinds of abuses,” she added.

Eyewitnesses say that the police forcibly entered the homes of the boys involved in the protest and beat them up, before detaining them.

Police has filed an FIR against Azamgarh protesters. According to the FIR the protesters have been slapped with rioting, sedition and 17 other charges.

On Wednesday evening, Aligarh Muslim University students took out a march to protest against the police aggression on the protesters of Azamgarh.
