Bengal BJP chief barred from campaigning over “there would be many Sitalkuchies” remarks

Election Commission of India (ECI) has imposed a 24-hour ban on West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh for violation of Model Code of Conduct, prohibits him from campaigning from 7 pm on April 15 to 7 pm on April 16.

The ban is for his remarks that there would be “Sitalkuchi in several places,” a reference to the killing of four Muslim youths in firing by CISF during polls in Cooch Behar district.

According to EC, his statements were provocative and could lead to a breakdown of law and order.

The notice, issued by the poll body on Tuesday, had said that the Commission is of the considered view that Dilip Ghosh has in violation of various clauses of the Model Code of Conduct and provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and the Indian Penal Code “made statements that are provocative and can seriously incite the emotions”.

This could “lead to a breakdown of law and order thereby adversely affecting the election process”, the notice said.
