Bhim Army students protest demanding release of Chandrashekhar Azad

Bhim Army Students’ Federation activists on Sunday held a protest at the Jantar Mantar, demanding the release of Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, who was arrested by the Delhi Police from the Delhi’s Jama Masjid during anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest.

Azad is currently in judicial custody till January 18.

“Chandrashekhar Azad was arrested only because he was protesting, which is our Constitutional right. Our demand is that he should be released unconditionally and at the earliest,” Aayush Raj Singh, a member of Bhim Army Students’ Federation told ANI.

“Azad is still in jail and it’s high time we respond. The Sangh Parivar rightly finds its enemies in leaders of oppressed unity. We should do everything to take his life out of danger,” Ladeeda Farzana, student activist from the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) said.

Demanding the release of Bhim Army leader Azad, writer Meena Kandasamy tweeted: “Brahminism/ Hindutva has consistently used the police-criminal-judicial framework to oppress & crush Dalit assertion/ fightback/ organization. To counter radical activism, the state criminalizes dissent, and breaks Dalit leadership & movements by throwing them in jail.”

Meanwhile, a court in Delhi on Thursday ordered Tihar Jail authorities to immediately take Azad to All India Institute of Medical Sciences for medical treatment.

In his application, moved on Monday, Azad said he was suffering from polycythemia, a blood disease that may lead to cardiac arrest if not treated urgently. The disease “requires continuous checkup from the doctors concerned from AIIMS, who are supervising his treatment for a long time,” he added. The court also noted that two doctors had certified that Azad was suffering from polycythemia.
