BJP sowing poisonous seeds in Lakshadweep, says ET Muhammed Basheer MP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is currently sowing poisonous seeds in Lakshadweep, where more than 99 percent Muslims live, alleged Indian Union Muslim League national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP ET Muhammed Basheer.

The MP’s response comes at a time the residents of Lakshadweep are protesting against current administrator Praful K Patel for introducing draconian laws that have the tendency to disrupt and displace the life Lakshadweep people.

“It is believed that Praful Kodha Bhai Patel, who was appointed by the Central Government as the Lakshadweep Administrator, was given the task of communalizing the island as soon as possible,” Basheer said.

“The centre is so hellbent on sowing division among cohesive Lakshadweep community. Weird new measures are being enacted by current Praful Patel administration to the detriment of predominantly Muslim indigenous population. This is a blatant misuse of power and must not be allowed,” Basheer MP tweeted.

He went on to say: “The government is now trying to implement the Goonda Act. They think things will be easier if they have the charcoal draconian law in place to suppress the voices of protest.”

Lakshadweep Anti- Social Activities Regulation 2021 or the Goonda Act gives the administration the power to detain any person without trial. The administration can arrest any person they think is dangerous and even outlaw a person’s legitimate rights in that scenario.

According to the Muslim League politician and Kerala MP, attempts have been made to ban meat consumption in the area where 99 percent Muslims live.

“The Lakshadweep Animal Preservation Regulation, 2021act proposes a total ban on the slaughter of cows, calves (male and female), bull and bullock and a ban on beef and beef products.

“The locals, including the Anganwadi and health workers working there, were sacked. Fishing is their main livelihood. It is also common practice to file cases against fishermen for on flimsy ground,” Basheer MP said.

Launching a fresh attack against BJP’s intervention in the Union Territory, MP continued: “There are no snakes in Lakshadweep. But there is more to the spread of communal venom now, with the support of the central government, than the venom of snake bites.”

While sharing an old speech of him in Lok Sabha, Mohammed Basheer MP added: “This move is highly objectionable. I have warned in Parliament on 13.02.2021 about this evil practice of bureaucracy by the Central Government. Relevant parts of it are added below.”
