“Break their legs”: BJP’s Pragya Thakur calls on parents to punish daughters visiting non-Hindu homes

In yet another instance of Islamophobic rhetoric, former Bhopal MP and BJP leader Pragya Singh Thakur urged parents to “break the legs” of their daughters if they visit the homes of non-Hindus.

The comments, made during a religious event in Bhopal earlier this month, have drawn sharp criticism from the Congress, which accused the BJP of spreading “hatred and intolerance.” In a video of the event that has since gone viral, Thakur “advises” parents to take extreme measures to ensure that their daughters adhere to what she described as “Hindu values and discipline.”

“Make your mind strong,” she said. “If your daughter does not listen to you and goes to a non-Hindu’s house, do not hesitate to consider breaking her legs.

“Parents who punish their children do so for their well-being and their future and not to harm them,” Thakur added.

She went on to caution families against “wayward” daughters who, according to her, fail to respect traditional values or are inclined to “run away from home.”

“Be more vigilant towards them. Stop them by any means through scolding, explanation, or even beating, but do not let them step out of your homes,” she said during her speech.

The video triggered widespread outrage on social media, with critics calling her remarks deeply regressive and dangerous.
