The Border Security Force jawan, who crossed the International Border a day after the Pahalgam attack and was detained by Pakistan, was sent back to India on Wednesday through the Joint Check Post Attari, Amritsar.
Purnam Kumar Shaw, a 40-year-old Border Security Force (BSF) constable from Hooghly, West Bengal, was detained by Pakistan Rangers on April 23, 2025, after crossing the international border in Punjab’s Ferozepur district while on duty.
“Today BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since 23 April 2025, was handed over to India at about 1030 hours through the Joint Check Post Attari, Amritsar. The handover was conducted peacefully and in accordance with established protocols,” announced a statement released by BSF.
“With the consistent efforts of BSF through regular flag meetings with Pakistan Rangers and through other communication channels, the repatriation of BSF Constable has become possible,” they added.
Shaw, who joined the BSF in 2008 and was posted with the 24th Battalion, was assisting farmers near the border when he strayed into Pakistani territory.
This move comes just days after the announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, following intense tensions.
