Bulli Bai: “Prosecute soon,” says UN special rapporteur on minority issues

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues, Dr Fernand de Varennes, on Tuesday, condemned the harassment of Muslim women through the Github app where doctored photographs were held for “auction”.

Varennes stated that such incidents need to be prosecuted as soon as they occur.

“Minority Muslim women in India are harassed and ‘sold’ in social media apps, #SulliDeals, a form of hate speech, must be condemned and prosecuted as soon as they occur. All Human Rights of minorities need to be fully and equally protected,” Varennes tweeted.

Last week, Delhi Police arrested Aumkareshwar Thakur, 26, who is believed to be the creator of the “Sulli Deals” app from Madhya Pradesh’s Indore. The app had put up hundreds of Muslim women, including journalists and activists for online auction last July.

This was the first arrest made in the case.

Following “Sulli Deals” another app “Bulli Bai” also targeted Muslim women into mock auctioning. Delhi Police arrested the creator of the recent app, Neeraj Bishnoi, a 21-year-old second-year engineering student from Assam.
