After two months in custody, Campus Front of India (CFI) national general secretary Rauf Shareef was on Friday granted bail by a Principal Session’s Court in Ernakulam in a case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The court also rejected ED’s plea seeking to move the case to Uttar Pradesh
Rauf Shareef, national leader of CFI, a student wing of the Popular Front of India (PFI) was arrested by ED under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in December 2020.
ED on Thursday filed its first chargesheet against Rauf Shareef, journalist Siddique Kappan, Atikur Rahman, national treasurer of Campus Front of India (CFI), Masud Khan, a student at Jamia Millia Islamia, and a cab driver Mohammad Alam accusing them of wanting to “incite communal riots and spread terror” in the aftermath of the Hathras case. The complaint was filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Reacting to ED’s allegations, the Campus Front of India and its mother organization Popular Front of India said “wanton attempts have been made to mislead the media and society about our organization.”
“Instead of proving its case through transparent investigations, ED continues to drag the name of Popular Front into fabricated and politically motivated case like the imaginary ‘instigation of caste violence’ at Hatras,” they said.
