‘Can create Jallianwala Bagh-type situation’: Shiv Sena leader’s genocidal speech warns protest against Waqf Amendment Bill

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam warned of a ‘Jallianwala Bagh-type’ situation after the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) stated that protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill would continue.

The AIMPLB stated that if Parliament passed the Waqf Amendment Bill, the country would witness another ‘Shaheen Bagh.’ Shaheen Bagh, in the national capital, New Delhi, was the epicenter of historic protests against discriminatory citizenship laws—CAA and NRC—in 2019.

Speaking to IANS on Tuesday, Nirupam claimed that the amendments to the Waqf Bill were intended to resolve existing issues and would not harm the Muslim community at large.

He also asserted that if there were objections, they should be addressed in court and that the Board must not challenge the decision politically.

“If certain sections are eyeing particular benefits by threatening another Shaheen Bagh-like stir, they should be warned that this could also lead to a situation like Jallianwala Bagh,” he stated.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre occurred on April 13, 1919, when British troops under General Dyer fired on a peaceful gathering in Amritsar, killing hundreds of unarmed Indians. They were protesting against the Rowlatt Act, which allowed the British government to detain people without trial, and the arrest of nationalist leaders Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr. Satya Pal. This brutal act became a turning point in India’s struggle for independence, fueling nationwide outrage against British rule.
