Chandra Shekhar Azad, Radhika Vemula to commemorate Rohith Vemula Shahadath Din in Hyderabad University

Azad Samaj Party national president Chandra Shekhar Azad, Dalit rights activist Radhika Vemula and caste killing survivor Avanthi will participate in a programme commemorating Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula on his 7th death anniversary, 17th January, 2023 in University of Hyderabad, organisers Ambedkar Students’ Association said.

Kaki Madhava Rao (retd. IAS), Dr. Joby Joseph (Associate Professor, School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad) and Adv. Jai Bhim Rao (AP High Court) will join the program.

The guests will garland Rohith Stupa in the campus.

In January 2016, the young Dalit academic Rohith Vemula killed himself after he was suspended from university, in a case many have blamed on caste-related discrimination. Vemula’s institutional murder sparked massive protests across the country.

In his last note, Vemula had alleged caste-based discrimination, social boycott and harassment by the university. He and four other Dalit scholars who were active leaders of ASA, were suspended on the complaint of a leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the Hindu militant group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
