Country can’t have lockdown of people, economy lockout: Congress

The Congress today urged the government to formulate a national plan for handling the coronavirus crisis under the Disaster Management Act.

Congress leader Kapil Sibal said at a virtual press conference that it is time the government should rethink on lockdown measures as the country cannot have the “lockdown of people and lockout of the economy”.

Sibal also called upon the judiciary to evolve a policy to ensure that the justice delivery system is considered an essential service during such crisis.

Congress alleged that many officials, who do not have any idea about ground realities, were formulating policy for the government during the lockdown.

Senior Congress leader and Karnataka Opposition leader Siddaramaiah also took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the plight of migrant labourers who have been affected the most by the pandemic controlled restrictions.

Dubbing the Centre “balcony sarkar”, Siddaramaiah said that the conditions in which the migrant workers did not change even after a month in lockdown. “They are still struggling for food and shelter,” he said.
