Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday expressed solidarity with the people of India battling the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, saying “we must fight this global challenge confronting humanity together.”
India’s coronavirus infections have risen by 346,786 overnight, the health ministry has said, setting a new world record for the third consecutive day, as overwhelmed hospitals in the densely-populated country begged for oxygen supplies.
In a tweet, PM Khan said: “Our prayers for a speedy recovery go to all those suffering from the pandemic in our neighbourhood and the world.”
“I want to express our solidarity with the people of India as they battle a dangerous wave of COVID-19. We must fight this global challenge confronting humanity together,” he said on Twitter.
Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi also expressed support to the people of India and extended his sympathies to the COVID-19 affected families.
“We express our support to the people of India in the wake of the current wave of #COVID19 infections that has hit our region hard. On behalf of the people of Pakistan, I extend our heartfelt sympathies to the affected families in #India,” Qureshi tweeted.
India is in the grip of a rampaging second wave of the pandemic, hitting a rate of one virus death in just under every four minutes in Delhi as the capital’s underfunded health system buckles.
The government has deployed military planes and trains to get oxygen from the far corners of the country to Delhi.
