CPI(M) worker killed in BJP violence in Tripura, 12 including left MLA seriously injured

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Tripura said that one of its activists was killed and 12 others, including former finance minister Bhanu Lal Saha, were injured in an attack by supporters of the ruling BJP in Sepahijala district on Wednesday.

“Comrade Sahid Miah was brutally killed today by BJP goons in Tripura who attacked CPI(M) leaders and workers. At Least 12 comrades including senior leader MLA comrade Bhanu Lal Saha were seriously injured. Red Salute Comrade Sahid Miah,” read a tweet by the official handle of CPI(M).

The violence broke out when a group of CPI(M) supporters tried to reopen a local party office which was gutted in political violence in 2018, shortly after the BJP-led government came to power.

The incident occurred at Charilam, home turf of deputy chief minister Jishnu Devvarma, barely 27 kilometres away from Agartala.

The deceased Sahid Miah was 65-year-old.

“Our workers gathered there with permission from the police. But the BJP workers started pelting stones and attacked our workers with sticks and bottles. One of our senior workers died and another 10 got injured,” said CPI(M) state general secretary Jitendra Choudhury.

He went on to say: “This is nothing but a display of the sorry state of affairs in Tripura under BJP rule. BJP workers had attacked our office at Charilam in 2018 soon after they won the elections and since then our office there remained shut. After four years, we decided to open the office but the BJP workers again attacked us.”
