Cyclone Nisarga, which intensified into a “severe cyclonic storm” on Wednesday morning makes landfall on the Maharashtra coast. Over 10,000 people, including some coronavirus patients, have been moved to safer locations.

Mumbai, the city worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak with over 41,000 cases so far, is set to face first such storm in over 100 years.

Prohibitory orders have been placed in Mumbai, banning the movement of people along the coast. The ban is from Wednesday morning till next day’s noon.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts winds gusting up to 120 km per hour (75 miles per hour). About 43 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are deployed, of which 21 are in Maharashtra.

This is the second cyclone to strike India in two weeks. Cyclone Amphan which hit the eastern coastal area a few weeks ago wreaked havoc in West Bengal killing 72 people in the state.
