Delhi violence: Police rule out rioters camp Mohan nursing home from probe

A video surfaced in social media and shared by locals to Maktoob shows that rioters were stationed on the terrace of Mohan nursing home with adequate arms including guns and petrol bombs and they were in action during broad daylight.

Charge sheets submitted by police in connection with Delhi violence omit mention of bullet firings from Mohan nursing home neglecting numerous complaints and visual evidence.

The police investigation received wide criticism for its partisan narration which excludes actions of Hindu groups including the crucial instigating speech by BJP leader Kapil Mishra.

Mohan nursing home, a three-floored building on the Bajanpura side of the Wazirabad Highway in the northeast Delhi became a strategic position for Hindu groups to unleash an attack on Chandbagh Anti-CAA protesters.

A video surfaced in social media and shared by locals to Maktoob shows that rioters were stationed on the terrace of Mohan nursing home with adequate arms including guns and petrol bombs and they were in action during broad daylight.

“Mohan Nursing home was mentioned in many complaints, but police neglected it,” Mehmood Pracha, a senior advocate who represents numerous victims from Northeast Delhi told Maktoob.

Shahid Alvi, a 23-year-old auto driver was shot dead near Mohan nursing home on 24 February. An eyewitness said that Alvi was hit from firing from Mohan nursing home. But the charge sheet filed by the police portrays him as one of the rioters and concludes “Shahid was accidentally killed by his own men”.

Six Muslim men were arrested in connection with Shahid’s murder. According to police, Shahid was accidentally shot twice in the stomach.

On 27 February, Maktoob released a video of the eyewitnesses who made claims about the Nursing home. The locals claimed many were shot from the building in broad daylight with police standing on their side of the road.

“The firing was happening out of Mohan nursing home. None of the boys in Chandbagh were in possession of either guns or bullets, children did not have stones even,” a local resident said.

She is convinced that all the destruction was committed by rioters who were camping in there.

“Why did the police stand mutely outside the locality when they were doing nothing to stop this targeted attack?” another woman asked.

“RSS people were pelting stones along with police from the ground,” Shahzad, a resident of Chandbagh also told Maktoob.

A photographer (name withheld) who was trapped inside Mohan nursing home on the same day told Maktoob that dozens of people were entering the building with boxes of petrol bombs as police stood outside.

“Police after being chased by the mob joined the Hindu side and retaliated from the ground,” the photographer recalls.

Police assaulted him inside the hospital for clicking pictures.

According to the police version, the mob chased injured police officers to Mohan nursing home and even vandalized it. But no further clarity about the stationed rioters on the terrace of the same building.

The protest site was gutted down by police on 25 February after prolonged clashes with Anti CAA protestors. Hindu groups also joined the police, according to the Shahzad.

On the night of 25 February, the second day of violence, Maktoob journalists visited Wazirabad highway. The streetlights were blacked out and policemen were seen along with armed mobs who raised ‘Jai Shree Raam’ slogans. A car was burned down a few meters from the police convoy without any intervention.

Mehmood Pracha claims the owner of Mohan nursing home is an active BJP worker. Maktoob found out the nursing home has three directors but couldn’t link their affiliation with BJP. But interestingly, many right-wing Twitter handles have come in defense for the Mohan nursing home rubbishing the visual evidence.

No charges or news about an investigation on Mohan nursing home have come out since the violence.

Ragini Tiwari, a self-acclaimed Hindutva activist who was leading mobs with arms and giving hate speeches against Muslims was seen in front of Mohan nursing home at 10 PM on 23 February, according to The Quint.
