“Deprived of rights,” Muslim orgs in Kerala to launch joint agitation against left govt

Marking their opposition to the CPI(M) led government’s decision to rejig the minority scholarship ratio, an umbrella body of Muslim organisations in Kerala on Sunday has constituted a Sachar Samrakshana Samithi (roughly translates as Save Sachar [Sachar Commission] Committee).

The meeting of Muslim groups convened by Indian Union Muslim League in Kozhikode has decided to launch a joint agitation.

The Muslim leaders noted that while other states in the country implemented the recommendations of Rajinder Sachar committee, which was constituted to look into the backwardness of the Muslim community in the country, and come up with suggestions to alleviate that, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has taken a stand of denying the benefits recommended by the committee.

A secretariat dharna will be held on 3 August under the aegis of SSS, which will be attended by Muslim leaders, leaders told Maktoob. They will also meet the chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and submit a memorandum on the day.

The Save Sachar Committee has Muslim League leader Syed Sadikkali Shihab Thangal as chairman and will have representatives from all Muslim organisations.

“We will take steps to create awareness against the moves to communally disparage the demands raised by the Muslim community,” Thangal said.

The meeting of Muslim leaders demanded that the recommendations of the Sachar committee should be implemented solely for Muslims by drawing up a special scheme and other welfare schemes for minorities should be implemented on the basis of population.

“We will give full support to implement the recommendations of various commissions constituted to look into other communities in the state,” they said.
