Facebook bans poet K Satchidanandan over video targeting BJP and PM Modi

Facebook has banned renowned poet and critic K. Satchidanandan for 24 hours after the poet uploaded a video on the BJP’s defeat in Kerala assembly elections and an advertisement for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Satchidanandan said he received a message from the social media giant Facebook informing him that he has been banned from posting and liking posts for 24 hours. He has also been directed not to appear on Facebook live for 30 days.

Satchidanandan who is an award winning author and a pioneer of modern poetry in Malayalam, said there was nothing abusive about the video and that it was a humorous take on saffron party’s performance in the Kerala polls.

“I did not post anything abusive. I received it on WhatsApp. It showed Adolf Hitler scolding his Nazi followers in his final days but the audio that accompanied it suggested that Amit Shah was lashing out at BJP leaders in Kerala in Malayalam over the party’s failure,” says Satchidanandan.

“It is clear that there is an understanding between the BJP government and Facebook to remove contents criticizing the former. I think they have increased surveillance over the social media activities of social critics and writers, which is quite unfortunate,” alleges the poet.

“Deplorable that Facebook has suspended the account of one of Kerala’s greatest living poets, K. Satchidanandan, former Secretary of the Sahitya Akademi), for posting a video about BJP’s defeat in the Kerala Assembly elections. We must not allow censorship into our politics!,” senior Congress politician Shashi Tharoor MP tweeted.
