Farmer attempts suicide at Shambhu border, dies at Patiala hospital

A 55-year-old farmer, Resham Singh from Pahuwind village in Tarn Taran district, allegedly ended his life by consuming poison at the Shambhu border, where farmers have been protesting for nearly a year.

Resham Singh was taken to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, but he could not be saved, farmer leaders reported.

”With profound grief and sorrow, we inform you about the sad demise of Resham Singh ji who had consumed Sulphas earlier today. He was referred to Rajindra Hospital Patiala where he left for heavenly abode. He recorded his last statement at Hospital,” read a post by Kisan Majdoor Morcha.

This is the second suicide at the protest site within three weeks. Farmer leader Tejvir Singh stated that Resham Singh was deeply disheartened by the Union government’s inaction in addressing the farmers’ demand for a guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

On 18 December last year, another protestor, Ranjodh Singh, also took his life at the same site. He was reportedly disturbed by the worsening health of 70-year-old farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a fast unto death since 26 November 2024 at the Khanauri border.

Under the banners of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, farmers have been holding protests at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13, following the security forces’ prevention of their march to Delhi.
