Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal took a dig at Narendra Modi government and said unfortunate that Centre’s trying to stifle the voices of protesting farmers, instead of listening to them.
“Farmers don’t want farm laws. Why is Centre showing tyranny when the section -for whom laws have been formed- don’t want it?” Badal who is also a member of Parliament from the Ferozpur asked.
Punjab leader also requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to listen to farmers whose protests against the three central farm laws entered the 17th day.
Badal accused Centre of trying to defame agitation by calling it that of Khalistanis and political parties.
“Unfortunate that if one disagrees with them they call them anti-nationals. Ministers giving such statements must apologise publicly,” he said.
The agitating farmers’ unions have rejected the government’s draft proposal on amendment to the farm laws.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the recent farm laws would give farmers access to new markets and technology and help increase investments in the agricultural sector.
The farm leaders have further declared their intention to continue the agitation till all the three farm laws are repealed.
The Delhi Police has increased security arrangements at the city’s border points following the announcement by agitating farmers to block the Jaipur-Delhi and the Delhi-Agra Expressways on Saturday.
Farmers opposing the new laws on agricultural reform have also filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking the quashing of the three legislations that they say will drive down crop prices.
