Gets bail in all cases, Nodeep Kaur to walk out of prison

Nodeep Kaur

Dalit labour activist Nodeep Kaur was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday in the third FIR registered against her.

The arrested activist had already obtained bail in two cases registered against her, and in the third FIR, she has been granted Bail today.

Kaur’s bail comes more than six weeks after she was arrested in Haryana’s Sonipat for allegedly gheraoing an industrial unit and demanding money from the company.

Apart from the bail plea, the HC had also taken suo-moto cognizance after it received an email regarding Kaur’s alleged illegal confinement by the Haryana Police.

However, with regard to allegations of her illegal detention, the matter will continue to be heard by the Court, reported legal website Live Law.

Nodeep’s lawyer Senior Advocate RS Cheema told Court that she is not a flight risk and that Bail is Rule, Jail is Exception.

Saying that she has been targeted and falsely implicated in the matter as she was successful in generating massive support in favour of the farmers’ agitation, Kaur had claimed in her bail plea that she was beaten, tortured and suffered multiple injuries.

In her bail plea, she also had claimed that after arresting her, the police officials took her to the police station “in absence of any woman police official” and was “beaten black and blue by the police officials.”

Significantly, the imprisonment and the torture of Kaur sparked social media debate and gained attention after many opposition leaders, activists, farmer leaders and global persons including Meena Harris, the niece of United States Vice President Kamala Harris raised concern about her.
