Home Minister Amit Shah is in Kolkata for the inauguration of Durga Puja pandals. An ANI report quoted him saying, “I today want to assure Hindu,Sikh,Jain,Buddhist &Christian refugees, you will not be forced to leave India by the Centre. Don’t believe rumours. Before NRC, we will bring Citizenship Amendment Bill, which will ensure these people get Indian citizenship,” Shah said.

But by the time Amit Shah speak, GoBackAmitShah is trending on Twitter. The hashtag was used by users of the social media platform to post as many as around 20,000 tweets, according to the data available on Twitter.

Tamil actor Siddharth has criticised the BJP chief, saying that it is against the Constitution to tell refugees that only Muslims will be forced to leave India by the Government.

“How is the Home Monster allowed to speak like this? Is it not against the constitution to tell refugees that only the Muslims among them will be forced to leave India by the govt? What is going on? These are the seeds of ethnic cleansing being sown in the open for all to see!,” Siddharth tweeted.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi took to Twitter to hit out at Amit Shah, saying, “The Home Minister is saying clearly that only undocumented Muslims will have to fear NRC, while others will get Indian citizenship @AmitShah I know you are allergic to it, but try reading the Constitution, FOR ONCE. Religion based citizenship is illegal and will be struck down.”

Scores of CPIM Bengal leaders and activists have been arrested while protesting near Kolkata Airport against Amit Shah, CPI-M politburo member Mohammad Salim tweeted.

TMC leader Amit Mitra, who is also the state finance minister slammed Amit Shah saying he is scaremongering in Bengal during Durga Puja celebrations.

“Does he know 17 people have died due to panic over NRC in Bengal,” Amit Mitra asked.
