Gujarat civic polls: BJP sweeps, AAP, AIMIM make inroads

Even as the saffron party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retained power in all six Gujarat municipal corporations — results of which were declared on Monday — Aam Admi Party (AAP) and the All-India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) who were contesting for the first time in Gujarat have made inroads in state’s urban centres.

Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP won 27 seats in its maiden outing in the state, all in Surat Municipal Corporation while the Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM which contested 21 seats in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, won seven, capturing them from the Congress.

As per the latest data, the BJP is appearing on course to retain power in six municipal corporations, winning 483 of the total 576 seats. While Congress has won 55 of the declared seats so far, the AAP and AIMIM, new entrants in these elections, made impressive inroads by winning 27 and 7 seats respectively so far.

Seats went down for the oldest party Congress in all the six cities, while in Surat, AAP replaced it as the main opposition.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal welcomed the election results and tweeted, “Nai rajniti ki shuruaat karne ke liye Gujarat ke logo ko dil se badhai! (Heartily congratulate the people of Gujarat for starting a new kind of politics).”

Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM, which also contested local body polls in Gujarat for the first time, won seven seats in Ahmedabad’s Muslim-dominated Jamalpur and Maktampura wards.
