He is in jail not for himself but for the nation: Umar Khalid’s mother

Jailed human rights activist Umar Khalid’s mother, Dr Sabiha Khanum, recalls the anxious week she spend with her son who was home after getting an interim bail to attend his sister’s marriage.

Khalid is booked under terror laws in a conspiracy case that burdens the responsibility of the 2020 anti-Muslim Delhi pogrom on Muslim activists.

Since 2016, student leader Umar Khalid has been in trouble for his critical position towards Hindu nationalist policies.

He was jailed for a protest at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and survived a life attempt. But none have bothered Dr Sabiha Khanum to stop her son from his activism. “He is in jail not for himself but for the nation,” she said.
