Hyderabad floods with protest against new Waqf law, led by AIMPLB, AIMIM

In one of the largest protests against the contentious Waqf Act in the country, the AIMIM and the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) organised a public protest meeting on Saturday at Darussalam, the AIMIM’s headquarters in Hyderabad.

Many speakers, including AIMPLB president Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, Hyderabad parliamentarian and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, and Muslim scholars from across sects and schools of thought, attended the event.

The demonstration gathering was also attended by members of several political parties, including the Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi, YSR Congress Party and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

AIMPLB president Rahmani said, “We trust the courts that there will be a stay on this law.”

“These demonstrations will continue till the time the Act is withdrawn,” he added.

“ When I tore the law ( copy of Waqf Amendment Bill) in the Parliament, I did so on behalf of all those brothers and sisters of other religions too who will be affected by similar draconian laws,” said Owaisi.

“We will not bow our heads,” Owaisi said amid slogans from the crowd.

During the event, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board announced that it would embark on a series of demonstrations over the next few months, until the Union government withdraws the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025.

The AIMPLB announced that a women’s massive public gathering will be held on May 22 at the Eidgah Bilali Hockey Ground in Hyderabad.
