Hyderabad techie arrested for rape threats to Virat Kohli’s daughter

teammate, Mohammed Shami, over his religion, after team India lost back-to-back matches in the recent T20 World Cup.

The Mumbai Police has arrested a 23-year-old man Ramnagesh Srinivas Akubathini from Hyderabad for issuing a rape threat to Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s minor daughter on Twitter.

Kohli’s family faced rape threats and abuses after skipper spoke out against the Islamophobic comments against teammate, Mohammed Shami, over his religion, after team India lost back-to-back matches in the recent T20 World Cup.

Akubathini was taken into custody by the cyber cell of Mumbai Police on Wednesday.

The accused who is a B-Tech graduate, changed his Twitter handle and pretended to be a Pakistani user after cops started investigating screenshots of the threats.

Earlier this month, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) had sent a notice to the Delhi Police seeking a response over rape threats made to Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s daughter on social media.

The Commission, in a letter to the Delhi Police, termed the incident as “shameful” and called for the immediate arrest of the accused.

From the moment Pakistan completed a 10-wicket victory against India, pacer Shami, a Muslim member of India’s playing-XI, was subjected to terrible anti-Muslim abuse on social media. The match finished in the 18th over bowled by Shami as Pakistan chased down a target of 152 runs with relative ease at the Dubai International Stadium.

Many Hindu nationalist Twitter users targeted the skipper after he spoke out in defence of the only Muslim player in the squad.
