In 10 days, second poll bribery case filed against BJP Kerala chief

Another case was filed against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Kerala unit chief K Surendran on Thursday for bribing Adivasi leader CK Janu to contest the Assembly elections held in April as a candidate of the National Democratic Alliance.

This is the second poll bribery case filed against saffron party leader in 10 days.

The FIR against Surendran was filed under Sections 171E (punishment for bribery) and 171F (punishment for undue influence in an election) of the Indian Penal Code.

CK Janu was named the second accused in the case.

Court in Wayanad district had directed the police to register the case on Wednesday. The court’s order was based on a petition filed by PK Navas, the state president of Muslim Students Federation (MSF), Indian Union Muslim League’s student wing.

Navas had sought the filing of a case against Surendran on the basis of purported audio clips exposing the bribery.

Parseetha Azheekode, the treasurer of the Janathipathya Rashtriya Party, had alleged that BJP leader paid Rs 10 lakh to his party’s suspended leader CK Janu to come back to the NDA, according to the MediaOne TV, a Malayalam news channel.

However, Surendran and Janu had both refuted the accusations.

The first case against K Surendran had been filed on 7 June for threatening and bribing a namesake candidate to withdraw his nomination during 2021 state assembly polls.

The complaint was filed by CPI(M) leader V.V. Rameshan, who had contested from Manjeshwaram constituency.

This came after the police have been directed to file a case under Section 171B (bribery to sabotage elections) of the IPC by the Kasaragod First Class Judicial Magistrate Court on Monday.

K. Sundara, who had filed his nomination papers as a BSP candidate in the constituency, told media that he was given money and mobile by BJP leaders.

Police recorded Sundara’s statement, who claimed that he was abducted, detained and bribed.
