In a first, university in Kerala grants menstrual leave for female students

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has announced menstruation leave for its girl students. This is the first time in Kerala that menstrual leave is given for students.

“Having considered the requests for menstruation benefits to female students, the Vice-Chancellor has ordered to sanction an additional 2% of condonation of shortage of attendance to female students, in each semester, subject to reporting to the Academic Council,” an order issued by the joint registrar said.

According to the university norm, a student should have at least 75 per cent attendance in each semester to sit for the exam. With menstrual leave giving two per cent condonation of shortage of attendance, the mandatory attendance for female students would be 73 per cent.

A proposal for the menstruation benefit for female students was formally submitted to the Vice Chancellor recently by the students’ union and it was approved following which an order was issued.

Earlier, the Kottayam-based Mahatma Gandhi University allowed 60 days of maternity leave for students.
