A disturbing hate crime unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, April 26, at Habibganj Railway Station (now Rani Kamlapati Railway Station) in Bhopal, where Government Railway Police (GRP) Head Constable Nazar Daulat Khan was viciously assaulted by a group of intoxicated Hindu youths.
The attack, which was captured on video and has since gone viral, was reportedly motivated by the officer’s Muslim identity.
According to reports, Constable Khan was on patrol around 2 a.m. when he noticed a group of young men consuming alcohol inside a parked car on the station premises, a violation of public space regulations.
When Khan approached the group and asked them to leave, the situation quickly escalated. The assailants, after noticing Khan’s Muslim name, allegedly hurled verbal abuses at him, targeting his religious identity. The confrontation turned violent, with the group physically attacking Khan, punching him, and tearing his uniform.
Two other GRP officers, identified as Constables Sandeep and Kamal Raghuvanshi, attempted to intervene but failed.
In a shocking display of Islamophobic bias, one of the attackers reportedly told the intervening officers, “You are Hindu brothers, step aside,” while continuing to abuse and assault Khan.
The video evidence, widely circulated on social media, shows the assailants forcibly opening the door of a GRP jeep, attacking Khan, and leaving him with a torn uniform and minor injuries.
The Madhya Pradesh GRP has registered a First Information Report (FIR) under provisions for assault on a public servant and obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty.
One of the accused, identified as a driver with a ride-hailing platform, has been arrested, while two others, including an individual named Dilip Ahirwar with prior assault cases, remain at large.
Superintendent of Police, GRP Bhopal, Rahul Kumar Lodha, stated that the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges related to communal slurs may be added if deemed appropriate. “The incident did not start with a communal angle, but the accused’s psyche is evident,” Lodha told media.
Despite the video evidence and public outcry on platforms like X, where users condemned the attack and highlighted its communal nature, no official police statement addressing the hate crime aspect has been issued as of Tuesday.
