At 78,903 fresh cases, Saturday’s COVID-19 numbers in India went past the previous highest single-day count of 78,427 infections reported in the United States on July 25, when that country was witnessing its biggest surge of the novel coronavirus.

This is the third consecutive day when over 70,000 cases have been recorded in the country.

India has recorded 4,96,070 cases in this week while going from a caseload of 3 million to 3.5 million, at an average of 70,867 cases per day.

With as many as 1,021 deaths in the same period, the country’s toll has reached 62,500.

The country has tested 4,04,06,609 people for the infection so far. The recovery rate rose to 76.47%, while the case fatality rate is at 1.81%.

The Union Home Ministry on Saturday issued the Unlock 4 guidelines under which metro trains will be allowed to resume services from September 7 in a graded manner, while public congregations of up to 100 people will be permitted from September 21.

More than 24.89 million people around the world have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, and 16.3 million have recovered, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 840,300 people have died.
