Anti-Muslim rally: Police detain Deepak Singh, raids underway for others

Following the public outcry, Delhi police detain Hindu nationalist leader Deepak Singh Hindu from his house on late Monday night for his role in anti-Muslim genocidal slogans at Jantar Mantar on Sunday, reports The Indian Express.

Singh, leader of an extremist outfit Hindu Force that is accused of orchestrating the 2020 Delhi pogrom, could be seen giving calls to kill Muslims in videos circulated on social media.

Delhi police were under fire on Monday for registering ‘FIR against unknown persons’ whereas the identities of organisers and personnel involved were evident.

The case is registered under IPC sections 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) as well as under the DDMA Act pertaining to violation of Covid guidelines.

Jab mulle kaate jayenge, Ram-Ram chillayenge [Muslims will chant Ram-Ram when they will be slaughtered],” slogans were shouted during the event.

Many civil groups including opposition parties have demanded the arrest of key organisers of ‘Bharat Jodo Movement’ which police claimed happened without permission. Over 5000 people gathered in Jantar Mantar, barely two kilometres away from Parliament, responding to a call given by Supreme Court lawyer and former spokesperson of the Delhi unit of Bharatiya Janata Party Ashwini Upadhyay.

According to Indian Express, police have so far identified four men — Deepak Singh, Vineet Kranti, Pinky Bhaiya and Uttam Malik — involved in giving warcry against Muslims.

Uttam Malik, is a follower of infamous extremist, Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati, who has been spearheading anti-Muslim campaigns in West UP.

Delhi Police is expected to make more arrests. On Monday police has said it will arrest BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay and others who led the protest in Jantar Mantar, less than a week before Independence day.

Youth outfit, Fraternity Movement on Monday demanded the arrest of Upadhyay, Narsinghanand Saraswati and his aid Gajendra Chauhan — who led the sloganeering.

A team of the Inter-State-Cell of Crime Branch was tasked with conducting raids to pick up the men, IE reports.
