Karnataka: Kashmiri medical student ragged, beaten, forced to sing, given death threats by seniors

Hamim, a second-year MBBS student from Anantnag, Kashmir, was brutally ragged and physically assaulted by seniors from the 2019 batch at Karnataka’s Al-Ameen Medical College, Bijapur, following a confrontation over a cricket match on Tuesday.

The traumatic incident occurred when the seniors ordered him to leave while he attempted to stay near the field, citing the match’s exclusive participation for the 2019–2022 batches.

When he refused, asserting that he had every right to be there, he was soon confronted by seniors who demanded an explanation for his “defiance.”

What began as verbal intimidation quickly escalated into outright bullying. Hamim was humiliated; they ordered him to perform an “Al-Ameen salute,” sing songs, and dance for their amusement. They even attempted to force him into their car, implying further harm. When he took out his phone to record the incident, it infuriated them even more.

Later, he was attacked in his hostel room by a group of 6–8 seniors. He was beaten, threatened, warned against playing cricket for the next four years, and forced to record an apology video.

“What MBBS? Noble profession?” asked the victim in an X post revealing the incident.

After the incident, a security guard was posted outside at night to ensure his safety.

J&K Students Association took to X, stating, “This incident exposes the dangerous culture of ragging that continues to plague our institutions. Ragging is a crime, and those responsible must face strict legal action. No student should live in fear in an institution meant for learning and growth.”

The body urged the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, to take immediate cognizance of this incident, ensure the safety of students, and hold the perpetrators accountable. It also called on the Karnataka government, the college administration, and law enforcement to act swiftly.

“Expulsion & legal action against those responsible is the only way to send a strong message against ragging,” they added.

“This is not just an isolated case of violence—it is a failure of the system meant to protect students,” said Nasir Khuehami, the national convenor of the J&K Students Association.

“Stronger anti-ragging measures need to be implemented to ensure the safety and dignity of all students, especially non-locals and Kashmiri students, who often face additional discrimination,” he added.

Meanwhile, a team of Karnataka Police, along with senior officers, visited the college to file an FIR, and the college administration is initiating disciplinary action against the senior students involved.

However, the victim expressed that he does not wish for an FIR to be lodged against those who harassed him, fearing that it could create long-term issues for him.
