Three Kashmiri students who have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra district for celebrating Pakistan’s victory against India in a recent cricket match were physically attacked when they were produced before a magistrate on Thursday.

After being produced in a local court, a group of men, including some in the uniforms of lawyers, were seen charging at the three students – Arsheed Yousuf, Inayat Altaf Sheikh and Showkat Ahmed Ganai – as the police was escorting them into the back of a jeep, according to The Hindu.

The attackers also raised slogans against Pakistan and shouted “Bharat Mata ki jai” and “Vande Mataram.”

The students, of the Raja Raja Balwant Singh Engineering Technical Campus Bichpuri in Agra, were sent to 14 days of judicial custody after they were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly celebrating Pakistan’s win over India at a T20 World Cup match and have been charged with draconian sedition.

Meanwhile, The Jammu & Kashmir Students Association appealed to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to drop the sedition charges against students in the valley on humanitarian grounds.

“Sedition charge against students is an unacceptably harsh punishment that will ruin their futures and will further alienate them. These charges will have serious consequences on academic and future career of the students and should be immediately withdrawn,” said Nasir Khuehami, national spokesperson of the association.

Arrests, abuses and assaults after India’s loss

The Uttar Pradesh Police have booked as many as seven people across five districts on similar charges. Chief Minister Adityanath has directed the police to file sedition cases against those celebrating Pakistan’s victory.

Nafeesa Attari, a private school teacher in Rajasthan’s Udaipur city who has been sacked from her job after she shared a celebratory post on WhatsApp following Pakistan’s victory, was also arrested by Rajasthan police on Wednesday. She was later granted bail on a personal bond of Rs. 20,000.

On Tuesday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered two separate cases under draconian UAPA against students and non-teaching staff of two medical colleges who celebrated the Pakistan cricket team’s victory over India.

India played against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. Pakistan won the match by 10 wickets.

After India’s loss, several Kashmiri students in Punjab and other parts of the country were physically assaulted and faced Islamophobic abuses.

From the moment Pakistan completed a 10-wicket victory against India, pacer Shami, a Muslim member of India’s playing-XI, was subjected to terrible anti-Muslim abuse on social media. The match finished in the 18th over bowled by Shami as Pakistan chased down a target of 152 runs with relative ease at the Dubai International Stadium.
