
Chairman All Parties Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq shared a post on X praising the gesture of warmth and humanity by Kashmiris for welcoming stranded tourists to their homes and mosques.
Several people were stranded in the valley due to snowfall that disrupted flight and railway operations on Friday. Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was also closed.
Moderate to heavy snowfall was recorded across Kashmir since Friday, including the season’s first snowfall in Srinagar city and other plain areas of the valley. In south Kashmir, heavy to very heavy snowfall was recorded in the plains, while central Kashmir’s plains received moderate snowfall.
Videos show Kashmiris serving food to tourists in their houses. Kashmiris have a reputation for being a welcoming community to visitors despite the turmoil in the region.
Local politicians and activists in the region shared videos of compassion by Kashmiris. Some stranded passengers are seen playing cricket inside the Qazigund-Banihal Navyug Tunnel.
“I understand there are around 2000 vehicles stuck between the tunnel & Qazigund. My office has been in touch with the administration in South Kashmir. While snow clearance has been done the road is very icy. Heavy vehicles are being allowed to move & efforts are on to clear the rest of the stranded vehicles,” Chief Minister Omar Abdullah updated on Friday.
