Kerala High Court cancelled the result of Assembly election 2021 at Devikulam constituency in Idukki district. The High Court observed that CPI(M) MLA A Raja was not eligible to contest in the reserved seat and disqualified him.
A Raja does not belong to the Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe community, the HC observed.
A Raja was disqualified after the court pointed out that he is from a converted Christian community.
The court was hearing the petition filed by UDF candidate D Kumar. The petitioner accused Raja of producing fake caste certificate to contest the election.
However, the court dismissed Kumar’s request to declare him the winner.
CPI(M) and A Raja may file an appeal against the High Court judgement.
Dalit Muslims and Christians have been demanding SC status for a long time, and the matter is currently under consideration by the Supreme Court of India.
