Mamata to lead march seeking death penalty for accused in R G Kar Hospital rape-murder case

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be leading a rally at 4 pm today demanding justice for the woman victim in the form of death penalty for the main accused in R G Kar Hospital rape-murder case. The accused has been arrested by the CBI.

This comes after the ruling party in West Bengal alleging a “coordinated” effort by the BJP and CPI(M) to politicise the rape-murder of the junior doctor. The Opposition parties accused the Trinamool Congress government of inaction in the case.

Following the outrage and criticisms from all corners and Opposition parties, the probe was transferred from the Kolkata Police to the CBI on orders of the Calcutta High Court on August 13.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Police so far arrested 19 people in connection with the vandalism and violence at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Those arrested were remanded to police custody by a city court till August 22, officials said. The emergency ward, nursing station, medicine store and parts of the outpatient department of the hospital were vandalised by miscreants on Thursday amid midnight protests by women across the state.

TMC MP in Rajya Sabha Derek O’Brien took to X to elucidate on why his party chief is leading a rally.

“Why is Mamata Banerjee eading a rally on the RG Kar Hospital incident”? Fair question. Because: 1) CBI, which is now handling the case, must give daily updates on the investigation, 2) The deadline given by the CM to Kolkata Police to complete the investigation was August 17. The same must apply to CBI, 3) Kolkata Police has arrested one accused. Justice will happen only when CBI nabs ALL involved and sends case to a fast-track court, 4) CBI taking over the case shouldn’t lead to it being quietly buried. The urgent need of the hour is swift justice and the harshest punishment for the culprits. No one who committed this barbaric act must be spared. P.S. Those who attacked and ransacked the hospital also need to be booked. The police have arrested 19 people.”
