Manipur: JD(U) extends support to BJP in ‘government formation’

The Janata Dal (United) on Saturday extended support of its six MLAs in the Manipur assembly to the BJP as the latter is set to form government after winning a majority on its own.

“In the interest of the people of Manipur, the JD (U) has decided to give support to the BJP in the formation of the government,” read the statement by national office secretary of the JD (U) Mohammad Nisar.

“The JD (U) would like to appeal to the BJP to honour the mandate reposed in the party and fulfil the hopes and aspiration of the people,” it said.

The JD (U) fielded 38 candidates in the recent assembly elections and won six seats.

BJP’s regional ally the Naga People’s Front (NPF) also announced its support to the saffron party. NPF put up 10 nominees and won five seats.

NPF sources said that the party is likely to seek a few cabinet berths in the new ministry, NDTV reported.

It said that the party legislators have unanimously elected Khumukcham Joykisan Singh as the leader of the legislature party of JD (U) in the presence of Afaque Ahmad Khan, National General Secretary, in-charge of northeast region.
