Meghalaya against ‘CUET’, will take it up with Union govt

Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbui speaking to media persons on new education policy in the city on Thursday.
On his visit to New Delhi, on Monday, the Meghalaya Chief Minister will take up the issue of CUET with the Union ministry of education, says Rymbui.

Problems arising out of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) are “real”, says the Meghalaya education minister Lahkmen Rymbui for a state that has only one university, which is a central university, whereby all the colleges are affiliated.

On his visit to New Delhi, on Monday, the Meghalaya Chief Minister will take up the issue of CUET with the Union ministry of education, says Rymbui.

While addressing these concerns last week, the education minister hoped that the CM would be able to place the concerns of the state at the Union.

He also said that the government is taking necessary steps to sensitize higher secondary schools, to aid the students in the application process.

In addition to it, he said that the state officials have been assured from the NTA that CUET centers would be set up across all districts in the state.

Previously many institutions across India had expressed their concerns over CUET. Jamia Millia University (JMU) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have raised issues over the absence of autonomy in the entrance process. St. Stephen’s college has announced that it would hold special interviews post-CUET. Both in Tamilnadu and Kerala too the governments have expressed their protest and concerns over the issue.

In continuation, many smaller states in the North-Eastern region, fearing their deprivation of federal rights have now started to become more vocal towards the Union government.
