NCP supremo Sharad Pawar Wednesday hit out at the Narendra Modi government, alleging it has been misusing institutions run by Union government for saffron party’s political benefits.
Referring to the Income Tax department’s raids on entities linked to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, the veteran politician said the raids are on for the sixth day on Wednesday, which is very unusual.
Pawar was addressing a press conference in Mumbai.
“Central agencies, including the ED, CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) and NCB, are being misused,” Pawar said.
He also said that the Union, after failing to destabilise the Maharashtra government for the last two years, has now resorted to targeting family members and close associates of leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi by conducting raids, “with the hope that this will break our will.”
The I-T department had raided entities linked to relatives of Ajit Pawar, a senior NCP leader, in the state. Senior NCP leader and former state minister Anil Deshmukh is also facing probe by central agencies on multiple charges.
Pawar claimed that his party and allies in the state government are resolute and these things will not affect them.
Though he didn’t talk about Aryan Khan’s arrest and BJP politician’s alleged role in targeting Shah Rukh Khan’s son, Pawar said the Mumbai Police’s Anti-Narcotics Cell has done a better job than the NCB in tackling the drug menace.
“There are two agencies here — one is the NCB and the other is the Mumbai Police’s narcotics cell. The confiscation of drugs by the Mumbai Police is far higher than that of the central agency,” he said.
Pawar further slammed the multiple CBI raids on former state home minister Anil Deshmukh in connection with its probe into the leak of its purported Preliminary Enquiry (PE) against Deshmukh.
He went on to say: “Anil Deshmukh’s residence was raided for the fifth time yesterday. I am surprised over the behaviour of the investigating agency which needs to raid a place five times.”
