Most of arrested in Palghar lynching belong to BJP: Congress leader

Sachin Sawant

Senior Congress leader Sachin Sawant on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of giving an anti-Muslim angle to the Palghar lynching incident.

The Congress leader said that where the incident took place is a bastion of the BJP.

“For the last 10 years, BJP is in power in the gram panchayat. BJP’s Chitra Choudhary is the Sarpanch. And most of the arrested people belong to BJP,” he tweeted.

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and pro-Hindutva media outlets including Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV attempted to give an anti-Muslim angle in the incident.

Sawant said that the BJP should be ashamed that it is trying to communalize the incident and play politics over the issue.

On the night of 16 April, three people were lynched at the remote Gadchinchle village in Palghar district. The three were trying to cross the border to Gujarat and were refused entry at Dadra and Nagar Haveli union territory. The villagers stopped the car as the area was infested with rumors about a kidnappers’ gang and thieves. A mob of over a hundred lynched the three.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday made public the list of 101 accused arrested in the Palghar mob lynching of three persons, including two sadhus.
