Mumbai rains: Death toll rises to 31

The total death toll in heavy rain related incidents in Mumbai on Sunday has now risen to 31.

As per the BMC Disaster Management Cell, 19 people died in the Chembur incident and 10 in Vikhroli landslide. Two other people were dead in separate incidents of electrocution and house collapse.

The incessant overnight rains threw parts of country’s commercial capital out of gear with the city witnessing severe waterlogging, disruption of local train services and vehicular traffic.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai in the backdrop of heavy rains.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray chaired a high-level meeting of officials through video conference at 6 pm today, in view of the situation following heavy rains in Mumbai. Also, Aaditya Thackeray, Maharashtra’s tourism minister, visited the locations to take stock of the situation, and review the relief work. Taking to Twitter after his visit, Thackeray praised all the agencies involved in relief work, further stating that the state government and BMC will provide all necessary financial and medical assistance to those affected.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed anguish at the loss of lives caused by wall collapse incidents in Mumbai due to heavy rains. His office also announced ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. A sum of Rs 50,000 would be given to the injured.

Maharashtra’s Pune also receives incessant heavy rain. As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune will witness “Generally cloudy sky, light to moderate rain very likely (isolated heavy to very heavy rain in ghat areas)” tomorrow.
