Muslim man arrested ‘mistakenly’, killed due to brutal custodial torture in Hyderabad

A 35-year-old Muslim man, Muhammed Qadeer, daily wage labourer, who was seriously injured after he was thrashed in the custody of Medak police in Telangana, succumbed to injuries on Friday.

Qadeer was undergoing treatment at the Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad.

“Police picked up Qadeer on the charge of stealing gold ornaments. They used third-degree methods on him. He was beaten up so badly that he had turned into mincemeat,” Qadeer’s wife Siddeshwari said.

According to her, Qadeer was picked up from his sister’s house in Hyderabad on January 27.

Qadeer could not stand on his feet, and his kidneys were also damaged due to the police torture, she said.

Qadeer is survived by his wife and two children.

Soon after his death, dozens of Muslims gathered in his village and asked Medak MLA M Padma Devender Reddy to take action against cops responsible for his death. The MLA spoke with Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohini Priyadarshini, demanding an investigation into the incident.

Another important thing regarding the incident is that Qadeer was picked up by the cops because his facial features matched a suspect in connection to a chain-snatching case.

“He was brought for questioning in connection with a chain snatching case as his facial features looked similar to the suspect in CCTV footage. He was brought to Medak town police station on February 2. His call data records were verified and he was let off on Feb 3 after confirmation about his non-involvement in case” Times of India quotes Rohini Priyadarshini, Superintendent of Police Medak District as saying.

“Registered our strong protest on the incident and started the post-mortem after receiving the copy of FIR against accused policemen. Arranged ambulance and vehicles to shift body Abdul Qadeer & his family members to Medak around 4 am. Now I’m in Medak to attend final rites,” tweeted AIMIM MLA Kausar Mohiuddin.
