Muslim man killed in Assam police firing

The Assam Police on Friday shot dead a Muslim youth who is an accused of murder. The police claimed that they killed him after he allegedly tried to escape during investigation.

The police had taken 33-year-old Shah Alam Talukdar to Guwahati’s Batahguli area to recover some items related to the kidnapping and murder case he had been arrested in last week, The Times of India reported.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Diganta Kumar Choudhury claimed that Talukdar pushed away the cops holding him and fled towards a jungle area.

Since BJP’s Himanta Biswa Sarma became the chief minister of the state in May 2021, at least 57 people were killed in police firings. Many of those killed belonged to Muslims and tribal groups. At least 145 were injured in police violence.

Shah Alam is among six accused in the case. Of the six, five have already been arrested.
