Muslim youth stabbed by Bajrang Dal for traveling with Hindu girl in Mangaluru

A group of Hindu fringe organisation Bajrang Dal men attacked and stabbed a 23 year old Muslim youth Aswid Ansar Mohammed who was travelling to Bengaluru in a private bus along with his female friend from another religion Ashwini Shanubhag near Pumpwell in Mangaluru on Thursday night.

The recent incident comes in the wake of divisive Hindutva rhetoric and laws across the country against Muslim men.

The woman, aged 23, also has suffered injuries.

“On Mangaluru city outskirts yesterday, around 9:30 pm, a bus was obstructed and a boy and girl who are classmates and friends, belonging to different religions, were made to get down from the vehicle. The boy was beaten up – and when the girl tried to come in the way, she was also hurt,” ND TV quoted Mangaluru Police Commissioner, Shashi Kumar as saying.

“They were classmates and the girl told us she had known the boy for many years,” he added.

They were heading to Bengaluru in search of a job.

According to the latest reports, the injured Muslim youth is in hospital and his condition is stable.

The Mangaluru city police arrested four members of the Bajrang Dal (Anil Kumar, Jayaprashant, Dhanush Bhandary, Balachandra) on Friday and booked them for rioting, promoting enmity between communities, assault and attempt to murder. They were later produced before a local court.
