Muslims in Vatva, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, have alleged that some extremists pelted stones at them while they were on their way to Taraweeh prayers, specifically targeting those wearing skull caps, including children.
They claimed that some masked men also pelted stones at houses.
Residents have also accused some individuals of forcing Muslims to chant slogans at knifepoint.
They further alleged that such incidents occur every Ramadan, yet no action is ever taken against the perpetrators.
The local Muslim community has lodged a complaint about the incident at the police station, identifying two of the culprits as Amit and Sunil.
According to the residents, the police were initially hesitant to take action and only responded after they waited at the station for an hour.
They also alleged that despite providing the names of the accused, the police recorded them as “unknown individuals.” The authorities reportedly acted only after the victims submitted video evidence of the incident.
“If anything happens to us, who will take responsibility?” asked a resident, Syed Mehdi.
“Every time, they console us by saying everything will be fine. But nothing ever improves. The perpetrators are never punished, and the police always release them after 24 hours,” Mehdi said.
“We are not satisfied with this, as they continue to create chaos,” he added.
In a video, he appealed for peace, stressing that during the holy month of Ramadan, the atmosphere should remain undisturbed. He called for a safe environment where people, including women, could live without fear or disputes.
