Muzaffarnagar to witness ‘biggest Mahapanchayat’ of farmers from 15 states today

Thousands of farmers from 15 states including Punjab, Haryana and Delhi from different unions reached Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh to attend a Kisan Mahapanchayat scheduled for Sunday.

According to farmers unions, this Mahapanchayat will be biggest held by farm unions in the past nine months since the protest against Narendra Modi government’s farm laws began.

“The Mahapanchayat will make the Yogi-Modi governments realize the power of farmers, farm labourers, and supporters of the farm movement,” the SKM, an umbrella body of protesting farmers said in a statement.

“Over 25,000 farmers have gone in hundreds of vehicles from Punjab to be part of this rally. Our fight is against farm laws and this time we are gathering in UP to send a message. People need to see the face of this anti-farmer BJP government,” Indian Express quotes Jagmohan Singh Dakaunda, general secretary, BKU (Dakaunda)mahapanchayat.

Most farm union leaders protesting against farm laws will be part of Sunday’s Mahapanchayat.

“We have gathered here demanding repeal of the three farm laws. We request the PM to take back the three laws,” ANI news agency quotes a woman farmer.

The announcements related to the kisan morcha’s Bharat bandh call will also be made at Sunday’s Mahapanchayat, sources say.

“The Kisan Mahapanchayat will also prove that the 9-month-long farm movement under the leadership of the SKM has the support of all castes, religions, states, classes, small traders and all sections of the society,” the SKM added.

The farmers body has also appealed to the citizens of Muzaffarnagar and adjoining districts to take out time to participate in the Mahapanchayat, which will be addressed by prominent farm leaders, and assist the farmers coming from outside.

Five hundred langar services, including a mobile langar system run by hundreds of tractor-trolleys, have been started for the arrangement of meals for farmers taking part in the Mahapanchayat.

To take care of the medical needs of the farmers attending the gathering, 100 medical camps have also been set up, organisers said.
