‘Nazi govt chasing artists,’ Oppn leaders after IT raids properties of Taapsee Pannu, Anurag Kashyap

The Income Tax department’s raids at production houses and event management companies linked to actress Taapsee Pannu and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap over alleged tax evasion drew severe criticism from the opposition party leaders.

“Such raids have become very common nowadays as the BJP uses the central agencies to target people speaking up against their governments,” Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Ashok Chavan said.

“This happened to them as they are celebrities who voice their opinions regarding what is happening around the country.”

Maharashtra minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Nawab Malik also alleged that the raids were conducted because they spoke against the Narendra Modi-led government.

“The premises of Anurag Kashyap and Pannu have been raided. Both were raising their voices against the Modi government. This action has been carried out to suppress their voices,” the NCP told reporters in Mumbai on Wednesday.

“Central agencies like ED, CBI, and Income Tax are being used to target those who take an anti-government stand and speak against the policies of the regime,” he said.

Rajya Sabha MP and deputy leader of the Shiv Sena, Priyanka Chaturvedi took to Twitter to criticise the raids. “Hope the Income Tax department of our country, is saved from bonded slavery status soon. Same wishes for ED and CBI too,” she said.

According to Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav the “BJP government has employed IT, CBI and ED to conduct raids on vocal and upright political rivals for their character assassination.”

He added, “Now, the Nazi govt is chasing social activists, journalists and artists to threaten them against calling spade a spade. Condemnable Act!”

The raids were also conducted at production houses and event management companies linked to filmmakers Vikramaditya Motwane, Vikas Bahl, and Madhu Mantena.
