
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday took suo motu cognisance of a media report on an auto rickshaw driver’s death in Hyderabad, allegedly after he was subjected to “physical torture” by the police, and sought a detailed report from the Telangana director general of police.
“The Commission has observed that the contents of the press release, if true, raise a serious violation of the human rights of the victim. Therefore, it has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Telangana, calling for a detailed report in the matter, within two weeks,” a presser from NHRC reads.
On May 13, 35-year-old Auto rickshaw driver Mohammed Irfan died soon after being taken to the Rajendranagar police station for counselling over a marital dispute. He was allegedly attacked in front of his wife’s family.
His family alleged that he was subjected to police brutality while police said he had died of a cardiac arrest.
